As part of our FutureSmart Mining TM approach to innovation and sustainability, we have developed four aspirational concepts that we are working to achieve. In this article, we take a look at the Modern Mine… Picture a hard rock mine where we safely and efficiently extract the targeted ore without the need for explosive blasting, our people safely out of harm’s way.
There are four main mining methods: underground, open surface (pit), placer, and in-situ mining. Underground mines are more expensive and are often used to reach deeper deposits. Surface mines are typically used for more shallow and less valuable deposits. Placer mining is used to sift out valuable metals from sediments in river channels, beach sands, or other environments.
A recently opened underground section uses deeper level extraction methods. In Stillwater, Montana, pgm is extracted from the J-M Reef. 80% of their platinum and palladium-rich ore is mined using a mechanized ramp and fill method, much like the LHD method in South Africa.
Mar 11, 2018 A highly productive underground mining method, longwall mining is used in a large horizontal spread of thin-bedded deposits of uniform thickness usually ranging from 0.6m to 1m. Used a lot by South African gold mining companies, this method can be used in both soft and hard rocks as the working area along the mining face can be supported ...

Right: Underground Mining. In each of these mining methods, various earth-moving equipment including shovels, dozers, hauling trucks, and loaders are used to remove and transport the ore. However, the first step is to loosen the rock in the ore body so that it can be moved and processed. Blasting and grinding equipment are used to accomplish ...
Shortwall Mining. This method of mining was developed in the late 1960's to take advantage of the then recent development of suitable hydraulic longwall supports, coupled with the productivity and low capital cost of continuous miners and shuttle cars.
1. Underground Mining Methods 1.1. Classification of Underground Mining Methods Mineral production in which all extracting operations are conducted beneath the ground surface is termed underground mining. Underground mining methods are usually employed when the depth of the deposit and/or the waste to ore ratio (stripping ratio) are
Choosing a mining method. The various methods of mining a coal seam can be classified under two headings, surface mining and underground mining. Surface and underground coal mining are broad activities that incorporate numerous variations in equipment and methods, and the choice of which method to use in extracting a coal seam depends on many technological, economic, and social factors.
Mar 15, 2017 Caps in the stopes (a method incorrectly classified as square-set mining, but more correctly known as stull and fill) do not need squeeze headings; plain headings as shown in Figure 3b are sufficient. Depending on the thickness of the vein, these caps may approach 16 ft. in length; their diameters are 16-18 inches.
Jan 30, 2021 In mining regions deeper than 1,000 feet (300 meters), the room-and-pillar method becomes highly uneconomical because the size of pillars required to support the roof are much larger, meaning that valuable coal cannot be extracted from them.
Jan 27, 2014 There is a variety of mining methods used, often in the same mine, depending on the geometry of the orebody and the stability of the rock. Ore is broken up by blasting and drilling. Ore is then removed or “mucked out” by a LHD (load haul dump) machine, which resembles a low-profile articulated front-end loader.
Another mining method that is frequently used is called alluvial mining. This type of mining is usually performed in areas of secondary deposits like riverbanks, beaches or even off-shore locations. Alluvial mining involves the building of walls and the diversion of rivers.
Method # 2. Rotary Drilling: For rotary drilling, hollow drill rods of steel or aluminium are used. These are thread- connected and transmit torque and feed pressure to the drilling bit or drilling tool which is attached at the end of a column of the drill rods. Rotation of the drill rods is through gearing driven by a prime mover at the surface.
In an underground mining method called ‘stoping’ or ‘block caving,’ sections or blocks of rock are removed in vertical strips that leave a connected underground cavity that is usually filled with cemented aggregate and waste rock. Although underground mining is a less

The underground mining methods we use include room and pillar, narrow vein stoping and large-scale mechanised mining. Room and pillar mining is a style of mining where tunnels are driven in a chess board pattern with massive square pillars between them which are gradually cut away as the work proceeds.
Apr 14, 2014 Underground mining methods: These are the methods/techniques employed when the depth of the deposit, the stripping ratio of the overburden to ore,or both becomes excessive to surface exploitation. Choice of an underground mining method is often closely related to the Geology of the deposit and degree of ground support necessary to make the ...
